TM Forum Autonomous Networks Project
Kevin McDonnell presented updates on the autonomous networks project at TM Forum, covering the reference architecture, closed loops, AN framework, and the newly launched AN Manifesto endorsed by 51 companies. Kevin discussed the Manifesto's commitment to sharing best practices and the progress made on various guides and the Intent ontology, emphasizing the importance of team collaboration, especially highlighting China Mobile's significant contribution. He introduced the AN Level methodology and guides, and presented a new framework, the business one-on-one approach, stressing the importance of understanding one's business strategy, effectiveness indicators, and having a plan in place. He also discussed the updated methodology's impact on domain evaluations, the role of utility in mathematical functions, and the different types of intents in the TM Forum.
ITU-T Latest on Autonomous Networks
Marco Carugi on behalf of the ITU gave a brief presentation on autonomous network activity. ITU proposed a more detailed presentation of cross activities for the next meeting. Marco shared information on Study Group 13's focus on future networks, emphasizing the group's ongoing work, including a focus group on autonomous networks. ITU also introduced two key points: the current work on network requirements and architecture beyond 2020, with a future emphasis on machine learning, and the topic of trustworthiness. Due to time constraints, the latter topic was not elaborated upon. ITU discussed the development of machine learning capabilities for autonomous networks, highlighting the creation of use case documents and the initiation of new work items on gap analysis and integrating knowledge management with the architecture. The architectural framework approved in December 2023 was based on a focus group, and new studies were proposed on various aspects of autonomous networks.
ETSI Latest on Autonomous Networks
Luigi Licciardi from Huawei shared the latest from ETSI, emphasizing the importance and potential of autonomous networks across sectors like production, transportation, and healthcare. He highlighted the necessity for collaboration, communication, testing, and activity coordination within these networks, and pointed out the role of ETSI in this area. Luigi also discussed the evolution and future of autonomous networks, focusing on the significance of network digital twin and AI in their development, and hinted at the contributions of GPT in pre-training transformers for such networks.
TM Forum Autonomous Networks Level Evaluation Pilot
Andy discussed the complexities of operation flow domains, process flows, and evaluation objects, emphasizing the need to customize the IG1252 generic framework methodology for specific evaluations. He highlighted the strong global interest among network operators in evaluating and improving their network autonomous cells, as revealed by a survey showing their willingness to share information and compare autonomy levels. Consequently, a pilot study involving nine network operators was initiated to assess the feasibility of globally comparing and developing a standardized methodology for evaluating autonomous network levels. The aim is to publish the results and improve the questionnaires for potential use as standard evaluation tools by the industry.
